One Word Summarizer

Materials Needed

None

Instructions

Each student searches his or her memory, notes, text for the one word that best summarizes or represents the concept or topic studied. This requires the student to clearly synthesize the material being reviewed. After the student has selected the word, they then write several sentences or phrases that help explain their word choice. The explanation should include the rationale for the selection and should capture the essence of the topic being summarized.

Notes

Be sure to give students plenty of time to do the thinking necessary to come up with a word that clearly helps them summarize and understand the concept or topic being studied. BE SURE TO DIRECT TEACH THIS STRATEGY BEFORE ASSIGNING IT TO THE STUDENTS.
