Know…Want to know…Learned (KWL)

Materials Needed

Chart paper/overhead for recording student answers. Students may also create individual charts.


Students brainstorm information for the various columns. Students then read, watch video, etc., checking for the accuracy of charted information. Information is then re-charted and discussed.


Charts can be posted in room to track work students do over a longer period of time. Variations include: What I Know/Think I Know/ Want to Know. An excellent strategy for current events.
