I Wonder Why…

Materials Needed

Questions related to reading. Note cards or sticky notes/flags for noting answers.

Prior to reading the teacher asks “I wonder why…” in reference to something explained in the upcoming reading. Students note possible answers to questions as they read. After the reading, teacher re-states question and accepts all answers. Then students and teacher skim through material to eliminate inappropriate answers and discuss remaining accurate responses. It is sometimes helpful to discuss how students knew this was the correct response.

Excellent technique to teach students how to read critically. Also helpful for students with special needs or sifficulty with comprehension.
